Earth Bound Flier # 7

"Earthbound Fliers" is a series that explores telephone poles in Portland, Oregon that are encrusted, almost ornamented with layers of torn, decomposing paper and staples. Repeated rain storms have created a rich patina. The viewer, not only perceives the warm, formal aspects of mark and color, but also a certain raw poetry. Each flyer represents new meanings and opportunities that overlay the outdated. Histories literally build upon the past. Generations of voices are revealed as a chunks of sedimentary paper fall to the pavement. These are stories of need and longing. The telephone poles are sacred space where pilgrims leave their whisper quiet pleas. "I have what you need." "Can you help me find what I have lost?" The sensual surfaces are the antithesis of these ghostly, once removed communications. Or perhaps it is the hulk of the pulpy mass that punctuates these shy cries to the air.
